I want to report jello4biafra for name. People of Biafra - West Africa is known because of the problem they had with economy and war. The country does not exist anymore, but the people still do. Because of all the problem that has been there, thousands and thousands of people, mostly children, have died by starvation. And today, they still do.. My girlfriend is from Zimbabwe and she have seen when people die by starvation and how much they suffer before they die. We give money to people in Zimbabwe every month to help as many as we can to survive and for children to get, for at least, the education to read, survive the day and a hope to have a future. Having a name like "jello4biafra" is racist and should not be allowed on your server and it makes me sick everytime i see it. Jello Biafra is the name of the lead singer of the Dead Kennedys punk band from the 80s. I'm sure that's what the reference is. |

can you explain completely; is it racist, or is it heartless, or is it just insensitive in that it suggests feeding Biafra an insubstantial food product? I am wondering if i am missing the significance of jello being wished upon a community known for starvation. Is Rice4Biafra racist? I cannot imagine what suffering is involved in starvation. Even trying to imagine, is a horror, and for children being victims.... I pitty your girlfriends memory. I just seek a rock-solid understanding. I am not understanding the racist (expressed hatred) component, although insensitive may be enough of a reason to require a name change. Wouldn't we ban the use of NewtownSkeetKids as cruel? Although that is a lot more obvious. I know this seems a no-brainer to you and your girlfriend. We want to be cautious when it comes to telling people what they can and cannot do here. ------------------ Something Really Witty!!! |

Sorry, i dont know who and what NewtownSkeetKids is. Racist maybe wrong word here, heartless and insensitive is better words and also disrespectful? jello4biafra is to make fun of their starvation and have nothing to do in game made to "shoot" each others. That makes more sense, we will take a look at this. You make my point very well. NewtownSkeetKids will be offensive to anyone who is saddened by the savage killing of the children in the Newtown tragedy. Referring to them as Skeets, objects designed for target practice, is heartless. Hello guys... Jello here ...a few words from me. As someone already previously mentioned Jello Biafra is the lead singer of the Dead kennedys ... I chose 4 only because the other numbers were already busy. I'm a big fan of punk rock since 80's and such just a nickname I chose... I played in a punk band aswell... I play CoD and other games from several good years and I do not tolerate the racist names and attitudes ... Since I remember I support anti-racist and anti-fascist organizations throughout Europe ... Big fan od St Pauli and other anti-rascist clubs ...the easiest way would be to ask me what's going on with this nickname.....just like Jello Biafra name is provoking mine is also - I see results here....just want to ensure that you have to deal with 100% an anti-fascist and anti-rascist ... no problem if I had to change the nickname btw...stay punk jello |

Yes, there is no need for anger here. We are having a polite discussion. Let us set aside the triggers that personally set us off. As a quick google search will find, Pingo is a mound of earth-covered ice found in the Arctic and subarctic, not likely a racist reference to negro tribesman or hispanic people. This is not a matter of bowing to anyone's will. This is a matter for discussion and clarification. There is such a strong target for the association of the name in question, namely a well-known singer. I cannot accredit the name to a statement on the suffering of any people, any more than Pingo points to a racist reference. At OTAC we try to keep as much a hands-off approach as we can, regarding player behavior. Sometimes that means allowing names that creep up to the very grey border of interpretation, intentionally or not. We do have the politeness rule, in which it is stated: Admins may request players to explain avatar names that seem offensive. If the player will not explain the name or the name turns out to be offensive the player needs to change the name or be banned. The intent is to seek understanding of any name. What does the user intend the name to mean? We often alert the player to any alternative meaning. We cannot satisfy the sensitivities of all guests, otherwise we would bottle that ability and sell it to the world and end all conflicts. If there is a legitimate application for the name, we will allow it. Is this fair for everyone, I am sorry to say, no. I am afraid it boils down to an issue of popularity. If we all lived in biafra, then maybe the association would be undeniably linked to tragedy. We would therefore all disallow this name. In very much the same manner that Pingo has decided to change his name to Patrik-SWE, Jello may make any decision he wishes. He is not required ------------------ Something Really Witty!!!
