Sitting here with my morning pot of coffee and cigarette and I got thinking about a player I banned a couple days ago and something he mentioned in TS when he came to ask why.

He said he live streams on Twitch.

Off the top of my head I can think of 3 or 4 relatively new players who also stream their play live on Twitch as well. (TTV)AlienGaming comes to mind as the ttv stands for Twitch Television

We also have had a massively discounted sale on steam for a while, although that might be over now.

The thought was With this sale, ongoing on or not, combined with live stream gamers we have been experiencing a comparatively massive influx of new players. The same goes for returning players.

Now the sale is one thing, but the Twitch streamers are likely also causing a trickle down effect for new players that I cant really quantify into anything sensible. Im certain they are having an effect though. These are good things

I have no designs to start live streaming myself and would much rather let the streamers we have continue on bible thumping for us when they're live on our server.

For the continuance of the server, how do we seize this opportunity and capitalise on this???

I think continuing to show that the clan is willing to be up-to-date with the times, an official discord server being one thing, as a lot of new members from the live streams are going to be pure discord people. Maybe a website upgrade, even if it's just the graphical design aspect.

Capitalising on the nostalgia of COD WaW is another good hook, many will want to come back even just for one game just to find that feeling of a good Call of Duty title again.

Thanks for posting this Tip, it's something that has been on my mind for a while now.
World at War is getting long in the tooth and it's becoming a challenge to get and retain new players. Nothing new there, this is the bane of every single online community. How do we stay relevant and maintain some sort of growth? How do we protect what we have all worked so hard to build?
Twitch, Discord.. good ideas but lets flesh this out a bit first.
We are now taking donations, and with this any surplus can be wisely managed to help bring new players in. That's the lifeblood of any online gaming community. Without the people you don't have a community. We need to grow.
Planning for growth:
1) What attracts players?
2) What keeps players?
3) Staying relevant and engaging
4) Expanded shared duties
5) Transparency
6) Promoting OTaC

So what attracts players aside from just the game? A sense of community is a great attractor. Engaging with new players/guests to make them feel welcome is a great start too. Lets use our imaginations here for a moment. There are a couple of things that we can do to entice new members to join.
One is to build on our sense of community through small giveaways for members. A good example is a monthly draw for something inexpensive but useful such as thumb drives (memory sticks). They are cheap and can be sent anywhere around the world easily (ie through Amazon).
Another way to increase activity and keep a vibrant community is to hold regular contests for recognition within OTaC. These contests can be something as simple as a stabbing contest for a week.... or use your imagination. Being engaged is the key.

What keeps players.
Here's the age old question that has plagued every clan since the net came online and gaming communities started to grow. Here again we run into that familiar word ENGAGEMENT.
Keeping people engaged isn't as difficult as it may sound. Special events in the forums (photo contest, the endless story post ) use your imaginations here. Forums don't need to be for clan discussions only. Get imaginative. As more people give ideas this will flesh out.
Another critical factor in keeping members for the long term is for the leadership to ensure that they are being engaged with the members and guests. This is the job for people persons. Critical analysis is needed for certain aspects of running a clan, but in the end it is about people. Having those in leadership who are or have been people managers is a huge boon to a clans growth. As well, when dealing with people a "one size fits all" approach rarely if ever works for the long run. Being able to quickly adapt and see avenues of choice and growth is a great advantage to have and can more efficiently be done with a team approach. A team built this community, a team should lead it forward. Membership drives do work, it just takes a bit of effort.

Staying relevant and engaging.
This is accomplished through discussions and action. The actions don't necessarily need to be grandiose in nature, but need to be thoughtful and purposeful. This is applied to everything we do as a clan. Staying relevant means that we're not stuck in one place and in one mindset.

Expanded shared duties.
Everyone favorite word...work. Well guess what folks, if we want this to last then it will take work, shared work. A greater sense of community is built when we work together for a common goal. The "work" in a clan isn't necessarily there every day to be done, but when something does need attention if we split the task between a few people then it's not a huge task any longer, it's a couple minutes of your time.

Transparency.
When dealing with collection of monies for running a clan it is absolutely critical that full transparency is provided monthly. How much was donated, by whom, what was it used for, and do we have a surplus and what will that be used for. This must be done monthly and posted.

Promoting OTaC.
Here's where Twitch, Discord, TeamSpeak ect comes in. I think a monthly Twitch stream could be very beneficial in getting our name out there and creating more interest in a very nostalgic game. No matter what apps we use, we need to use them to our best advantage. No one app is going to make or break OTaC, but what are the advantages to using them? If there is a direct and quantifiable benefit to OTaC then that adds value.

Maybe somewhere in the future, a network formation could be beneficial, another server for another game could be opened for a more recent game and the two servers could benefit each other.

This has been the pattern with many server-based communities that survive for the long term. I'm not saying right now is the best time for that; it might be something to ponder for a while.

Since you guys are talking twitch discord social media...
Did you know that the server is in a video with 9.7 million views? They talk trash but it can give a glimpse of what new players think when they first enter the game

Yes! This is where I try the most to get to new players. That it will seem strange now, but it's very fun if you give it a chance.

All I can say to above. Glad we are that strict? as our server is still running and all others disappeared.
I shows that we are really doing well and don't need to listen to such comments.

And Birdie all for it to spread the word. On discord myself since 2016 and recorded a few videos myself.

Can you explain what you mean please Hans. What comments are so disturbing to you and why?

The purpose of my post isn't to tear apart what we have, it's to build upon it so that it does last and grows. Without growth we will die. That's a fact of gaming clans, like it or not. We're seeing lower attendance and we're also seeing newer players come in due to steam sales. We can capitalize on this and grow this community larger and with more activity. All it takes is a desire to be better and a bit of effort.

Ok, well I wasn't really sure what you meant Hans.....LOL. Comments on YT are like bathroom tissue. Most are only good for one thing...haha

I'm sure that there are more ideas out there guys. This isn't something that changes what we are as a clan, it adds to it and makes it more interesting and attractive. We have good points and we also have areas where we can easily make improvements and watch our efforts grow. We're not going to reinvent the wheel, as it were, but we can be creative and raise our OTmC numbers. We were all new here at one time, and others have gone on before us and I think we're at a good time to really look at OTaC and see where we can improve and where we can grow and create something for the next few years that is still relevant and draws people to us.

Some gaming news sites would jump at the opportunity to feature one of the if not longest-lasting World at War servers in an article. Some sort of Q&A with senior staff, or the owner. Maybe that could be an excellent way to drum up new players.

Birdy, that is a great idea. Exposure to something like that could be a real boon to OTaC.

I'd sure love to see some more discussion about this. These ideas can work, have worked before and will work if we so choose to invest in this community.
