Hi there @ all,

i'm sorry for being about to type a lot of text in this message that
others have to read... if they like... (...tbh... i'm not but it's
a polite introduction to what i'm going to tell now...
...and if u don't like to read it, jump to the wrap up at the end
of my posting... )

What do ducks do (or didn't do...), when they have been offline (...beneath
taking care about themselves...). I didn't played computergames.
For about 6 month (± something). Then i didn't dare to play online,
because i saw, i'm completly out of practice and i startet to play
the singleplayer missions of COD5... it got boring and i tried to
reinstall COD 1 and 2 incl mission Disk... and played the SP Missions
there... and the more i played the more fun it was to me (...once again)
...until i played almost all of them for 4 to 5 times... i got bored again.
Then i was thinking about playing one of my former favourites, BF2.

I played it being aware, that it is absolutly no fun for me, to get all
the necessary updates (filesizes between 200 MB and 1,5 GB, which takes
me up to 16 hours of a reliable internetconnection to get them with
my available bandwith of 0.384 Mbit/s (max.) )...but i managed it and
i managed it to get the game running (... until i installed the last update,
1,5 GB... lots of new maps... but now the game doesn't start anymore...
<sigh>... more work to to, more things to google...)

With all that work i had a lot time to think about the games and to develop
what i call 'duck's obsessions' (...thinking of one day, i think it was
BluePhoenix who had the Idea or started the server, to play COD5 Missions
in cooporated Mode, with some other clanmembers... and i was very sad, that
i missed that event, only got told about it...)

why do i like BF1942 and BF2 that much...

1st, i was always fascinated from BF1942, because of u can steer almost
every vehicle on the map, jeeps, tanks, vessels, the carrier, the planes.

2nd there has been a very active mod-community which produced lot's of
trash but also some very good modifications like:

- Forgotten Hope (BF1942 and BF2, placed in WW2) with a lots of different
german-, US-, british-, russian-, etc. tanks and planes and maps that
are made to (virtually) realize real tank battles or dogfights, because there
are enough tanks/vehicles/planes for almost every player
FH1: http://forgottenhope.warumdarum.de/news. php?mod=FH
FH2: http://forgottenhope.warumdarum.de/news. php?mod=FH2

- Desert Combat (BF1942, modern warefare) they managed to realize Helicopters,
Apache AH64, which never was planed for that game by the developers... and if
u never played the game, believe me... using a good 3D joystick, it's... i'm
out of vocabulary to describe what i feelt... in german i would say 'geil',
which is afaik best translated with aaaaaaaaaaawesom'

- Point of Existence/PoE (BF Vietnam and BF2, modern warfare) which brought
the (almost) complete equipment of the german ground forces like leopard2-,
Marder-, and Gephard- (AA-Tank) tank and the Tiger- and the HIND-Helicopter
into the game... can't get that vbg out of my face, thinking about the
"battles" i fouhgt as Pilot of the HIND...)
POE: http://www.pointofexistence.com/

3rd, like in all the real good games and like in all good clan-/server-
communitys u need Teamwork it's usefull to have a/some weapon-officer/gunner(s)
on board, when u fly a Apache/B17/B25 or to have some spotters, when u gonna
use the artillery in BF1942. Mechanics to repair a tank in the middle of the
battlefield. Suppliers and medics that support others with 1st aid and Ammo.
And u always need groundforces, because some flags to be captured aren't
in reach of any of the vehicles... .

but 4th... i am aware, that there are alot of other games available, other
people (...and me) like as much, as i do BF1924/2 (...i just got in mind,
that there is a Castle Wolfenstein MOD, can't remember the name at the
moment, that is an absolutly teamplayer game

and 5th, i also know, that in case of gameplay and quality, all the older
games are not comparable to the up to date ones... but they still can be
fun... lot's of...

-----------
Wrap up:
-----------

What's not my intention...

I don't wanna disturb the server community in any kind
I don't wanna take away players from the servers
I dont wanna use any of the OTaC servers capacity to realize
my idea (aah... except for TS sometimes... to talk about that
topic...)

Why did i type all that above?

(no ranking or priorisation in this list... just my thoughts...)
I just wanna ask which games do/did u play, that maybe interessting,
even for other players.
I typed it in the forum, because i experieced, that the community is
an active one, open for others opinions and ideas (...even if it's
a duck's ones...), open to look to the left, right and sometimes back
and to give constructive feedback, in which direction ever or to which
topic ever (technical, gamplay, etc...)... and i'm aware, that i'm also
gonna hear things, i don't like that much...
I typed it in hope, that some of u maybe interessted in looking
for way to have, every now and then, an event, based on games that
fit our interests (...and otherwise just stand on the bookshelf
behind u, being busy with collecting dust...).
I also see, the look forward to new games, because no matter who
(Founder, Admin, Member, Player) lot's of times i heard poeple
say that COD5 is getting older and older, and someday, at least
when it's no longer supportet by the OS of ur computer, it's gonna
die... it maybe helpfull to see if new games are interesting, playable
for the community and managable for the admins.
Another question from me is, does anyone else owns BF2, BF2 special
forces (the other 2 mission CDs are free to download, Euro forces
and... aaah... dont remember the second ones name)
Is someone interessted in get this game running... to get a
temporary Server (local server) running, that can be reached via
web-connection (VPN ??? ...looks like i need to work and learn a lot
about the technical background and issues that will show up)
(I) Don't expect a quick solution for that, but i think it maybe
fun too, to work on all that things... step by step...

Things, i would get happy about...
Feedback... some people that are interessted... new ideas...
...not to get killed for typing this/that much...

If u don' like to get feedback in forum, i try to show up in TS
more often from now on... but i'm still in trouble with, playing
and TS at the same time. At least, when the available bandwith
is used by another one while i'm connected.

And here is the positive news of this message... at least positive
to me... my provider decided to switch from analog phone connections
to IP-telephony (in the area i m living in...), which isn't possible
without refurbishing the infrastructure... i'm looking forward to
a 16MB/s connection, which should be establihed at the end of may...
maybe a little bit earlier...

So much for today... quack...
Bert

Duck, now picture you are going to an upper level management meeting and you are instructed to summarize your agenda into 1 powerpoint slide with 3-5 bullet points at most as you will have 2-3 minutes max to discuss them in the meeting. Could you concisely summarize the above into 3-5 concise bullet items. It may look something like this.

Duck's Agenda
* I have been away playing many different games and fell in love with Battlefield
* I want to start up a BF server, invite you guys to play, but I don't want to poach players from OTaC
* I am having my ISP improve my internet service
* I am loquacious

Please advise.

I do play Project Reality. So while I don't play vanilla BF2, I would be willing to try it.

So you should get together and open up a OTaC server. If enough people give money to the cause, surely OTaC would be willing to help maybe. Ask Bitterspock or malkey and talk with them about it. But you guys must donate for it.
I am having a break myself at present, family reasons, school issues for my grandkids, excams around the corner. Fooltime teacher at home for 5 of those to help them to achieve higher gradings ( GCSE, in the UK ). So better the grading more chances for good a-levels ( Matura in Austria). And I got to tell you chaps, those kids have got it a lot harder than in my time. (60s and early 70s).

If i had more time I could get into that, might be able to donate bandwidth and a computer to the cause. Just let me get all setup im the new flat. And how to isolate my home network from the rest without having to build a router or buy a better switch...

Well, i am collecting the ideas, the games, etc.

I think biggest probs are
* get the game(s)
* get the game(s) running (Howto/OPL for the ones who like to participate)
* get a running LAN without having a dedicated server (i never did this)
* later on... to find an appointed day/time

I started with BF2, because i like it very much, the different MODs and in
case someone want to buy it, it's easy to get it for a few bucks.

I' gonna move to/working on step two...
- search for a sollution
- thinking of install a virtuall machine running one of my old XP licences

...and step three
I have no idea how to start. Especially how to realizee the LAN,
which tools to use or which configurations needed. Will there be
issues when VM needs access to the LAN...

---<cut here<---8<---------------
@Tom (as i wrote in the PM...)
> * I am loquacious
you are right Tom...

If i allowed myself a little bit more time i may have typed the
compromise, i talked about in the text above.
In german we would say "You catched me with pants down"
(...not able to run away...)

> Please advise.
thank you for this reminder next times i'm gonna use it the best way i can.
---<cut here<---8<---------------

...did i do bitte.... aeeeeeh better now...

For a LAN solution, you could use Tunngle. I used that for a whole bunch of games when I would host random LAN games over the internet for my friends.

Hi,

@Stan, I just took a look at tunngle. it's worth a try... . It can be used free from
charge (but there are other options present).
I took a look at http://www.realitymod.com/media/screensh ots , i'm not 100%
sure, but i think i played that to. and i played AIX
http://www.moddb.com/mods/allied-intent- xtended
I remember different A10 warthog models and an AC130 spectre
If i didn't find servers for this games/mods i always started CoOp Network game,
10 players (me and some bots) versus 54 bots.

@Davide, thanks for the offer. It looks like u are busy with ur studies and ur work.
(... and not to get kicked by the Brexiters... funny... the word 'votekick' just got
a new, additional meaning to me... )
I do have a unused core2duo PC here which could be used as server on demand
I do have a Nettop too.
https://images.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgadgetsin.com%2Fuploads%2 F2010%2F05%2Flenovo_nettop_ideacentre_q1 50_2.jpg&f=1
(Atom processor... not sure if first generation or not) which may work... if i just
start the server software about one or two hours earlier... before we/i start playing
Bandwith would be great... but physicaly here at my location ...two months to go
Maybe u don't need the time for all of that. Just wait until we have an howto ready,
then u can do the betatest und do some quality assurance work for us...

Biggest problem is, after the update to v 1.5, i still can't get the game running again.
And because of the additional maps (...and the CoOp mode i think) the update is
mandantory... <sigh> ...working on it.

Anyway, thanks for the help/ideas... i appreciate that.

Bert

Really nice to see you online Brent. I did play most of those games but kept coming back to Cod2 and Cod5. Just like the play style more and the fluidity of the movement.

I hope to see you join us sometime.

Best of luck

Interlude...

i made it dl COD MW3... seems like it's possible to play single, coop missions, and multiplayer.
Anyone hold that game too? Anyone in to try a coop (or multi...) session?

Bert

supplement:

CoOp-Mode seems to be more like Zombie-Mod in COD5... anyway... lot of fun to me...

Fu... aeeeh ducky...
