Most, if not all, new players (and I am speaking of absolute first timers here) probably join the server based on player count in the server list and do not read what the server is called at all. They probably assume it's just normal game-play and begin running around, pistols out and whatnot. The get warned by admins. Many probably don't even read the chat, and some actually try to learn the rules of the server, to which for a new player seems to be many and somewhat daunting to remember. I have seen some newer players get warned for not crouching, they then start crouching to move. Then, quite soon after, they get warned about not having a pistol outside or not to use sniper scopes, or whatever and then they leave. Warning the new players is definitely a must. That said, when a new player shows that they are trying to follow the rules, I feel like admins (and just other players in general) should show more support of at least the effort. Sometimes admins will put a message something like "your compliance with the rules is greatly appreciated" or whatever it says. However I just don't see it all that much. I feel like there are many opportunities for positive reinforcement here. When a player joins a server and is immediately hit by rules they weren't expecting, it's easy to just say screw it and play somewhere else. Server population seems to be dwindling sometimes and am just trying to think of another way to retain players. Obviously, enforcement of the rules is absolutely necessary, just trying to maybe help with ideas if I can. Sometimes I have said in chat something like: "Try the game-style, follow the rules, you never know you just might ending up loving it!" I doubt it's hugely effective, but the positivity, I think, could be a plus... you smelling what I'm stepping in at least? I realize I'm not part of the clan or anything, just some words from a server player. My two cents so to speak. Love the server and thank you for what you all do. The effort you guys put forward to maintain the integrity of the server is what keeps regulars coming back. ------------------ www.conyersphotography.com |

Your heart is in the right place here Smiley ..... Speaking for myself if I can even manage to get a WTF out of new players I'll try to get them to read the rules. "take a minute to read our rules please" After that I dont try too hard unless they continue to engage with me. Its not hard to tell who is going to take an honest shot at it with us and who is going to be gone in minutes. Gaining new players takes good attitude on both sides. If the new player finds 10 rules daunting or just wants to be a dick about it ... man I dont know, switch to velcro shoes and stay off the internet I guess. Aquiring a new regular player at this point is about a 1/500 probably greater. Im more concerned with keeping the players we have here already. |

You could try not killing them so often (or maybe you just kill me a bunch). I don't know the 'thanks for complying' command in bitterbot, but I do say thanks or call them friend when trying to show the rules. I don't warn unless they aren't listening at first. But good comment from you, bud. Now please stop killing me! lol |

Smiley, as Tip said your heart is in the right place. Your suggestions have huge merit and there are always ways that we can improve and raise our standards of administering the server. My first suggestion to all admin is to follow the example set by MrMackeyMkay, one of our co-founders. His methodology is to be accepting of new players, respectful of all players and sort issues with the best interests of the community in mind. We would all do well to observe his example and do our best to reflect those standards. My second suggestion is for our admin to create a place that is welcoming for new players, apply the rules with a good dose of common sense and focus on the larger picture of how we want this community to be viewed. Be fair in your application of the rules, be considerate of those with whom we have difficulties communicating and have patience as we pursue our duties as admin. |

Hopefully my post didn't sound like a criticism of admins, because that was not my intention. At the end of the day, you guys are here to play the game as well and likely get tired of babysitting some players. Especially some of the regulars....probably. lol ------------------ www.conyersphotography.com |

You're right, Smiley though I felt welcomed when I first joined. I think the !s (Attention) commands should be used more than they are; Over the !w (Warning) ones. I know there's not much difference except wording. But the word attention is so much softer than the word warning. At an unconscious level, they can mean distinguishing between feeling unwelcome and someone trying to help you conform to the rules. Even though I'm not an admin, I will often go further than commands to help players acclimate to the server's way of running. Many admins and other regulars do too. Sometimes though, it's hard if a player speaks a language not in the current language translation list. Inevitably, the player never returns, which is unfortunate. Because if the community is to survive, new players are essential. Regulars won't be regulars forever. They find other hobbies or sometimes sadly pass away(RIP). ------------------ |

Birdie, it is my experience that unless you use forceful language to get their attention 90% of the time it is ignored. I've been doing this for over 20 years and I'd love it if a simple "attention" message got results, but that rarely happens unfortunately. Get their attention first, then when we have their attention we can be more congenial, which is mainly what happens. Spending the time to send repeated messages upon messages gets annoying fast and doesn't yield results, get to the point and the boys will listen. I use the SPAM messages a lot and that does yield results. With that said we do have the appropriate tools to deal with consistent rule breakers and we certainly appreciate the assistance of our guest admin. Keep doing a great job! On a side note I greatly appreciate that you took notice of the admin ingame and asked if you should continue with warnings as the admin presence was abundant. |

Tone is really important - for both admin AND player. I agree with Tip in that I can usually spot a player who may be more conducive to learning the rules and sticking around vs. someone who will either leave OR turn into a major server disruption. I try to be friendly up front and let them know it's a crouch server - then find out where they're from - run the rules in an appropriate language. If they respond - and even say something like "WTF is a crouch server?" - I will even continue to explain and try to get them to understand. Then the warnings - and then a kick only after multiple warnings. It's important that all the regulars try to be non-abusive at this point - but it's hard to convince people not to pile on with "it's the rules - follow or leave" kind of stuff. TRY to be nice people! As soon as they say something like "this is stupid" (usually expressed as "this is gay") or get abusive - then there really is no point trying to even warn them or convince them. They need to go. If they decide to stay - it means they will break rules and usually write a lot of nasty crap in chat. The troll designation helps to a certain point - but it can get exhausting kicking someone obviously hell bent on breaking rules while being a total dick. |

I admit, my post above was not written as well as it could have been. I rested my whole point inside the !w and !s commands sentence. My point was supposed to be having patience for a player who is trying to learn the rules. But, I bow to your experience as it's important. I thought the !sr command spamming the infraction to the player 3-4 times would get their attention. Thank you also for the kind comment. It warms the heart I might only be a warn sponsor, but I enjoy helping the place where I spend my nights. It gives me a lot of knowledge to watch the Admins do their thing. I take it all in, in the hopes that I could be an Admin one day, though my job makes it hard to give the hours an OTaC might need to have. I get in-game around 2 maps before peak time and stay for a couple of hours. Maybe guest admin would be suited better. Though that's something to think about in the future. <3 ------------------ |
