Do we know what the majority of other servers are running? Are their distinct differences between the two versions? It's rather odd to think that we'd have a version that won't allow us to attract traffic from other servers. |

2021-11-22 at 1:32 PM - BitterSpock: The issue is as follows. Yes you can downgrade patch your 1.8 client to 1.7. This will allow you connect to 1.7 servers. However.... gameservers.com where OTaC COD4 server is hosted is running 1.8 The files are readonly, and I cannot patch the server version to be 1.7 So if you downgrade, I do not think you can connect to the OTaC server which is stuck at 1.8. A lot of them are running this: https://cod4x.me/ I at one point was running that mod and I can tell you the amount of active/populated servers with this mod installed with game version 1.7 was like 5 times more than 1.8. It's actually easy to downgrade a 1.8 game to play on 1.7 servers because all you need is the 1.7 exe. I have that and I also uploaded the punkbuster files you need to play online with punkbuster enabled. I put them in a folder in TS called COD4 Punkbuster files. All you do is install the game along with PB and then drag the PB folder in the archive to the games main directory. Launch the game it will auto update PB but then you just hit cancel and close the PB window. Then in game under multiplayer options you can enable punkbuster. ------------------

If I'm not mistaken from what I read is that gameservers.com has a promod option that allows you to use the promod tools which will allow you to do various different things but at the same time you can keep the server/game relatively un-modded. https://github.com/promod/CoD4-Mod-Tools ------------------

The old version, from what I understand, is easily upgraded to 1.8, and if Gameservers doesn't offer the 1.7 then where is this supposed 1.7 community? Sounds like we have incomplete information on the status of COD4 MW 1.8 Suggest we continue to set up server, get bot operational. If Gamerserves no longer has 1.7 there's a reason so let's move forward, we've come this far. |

There has been some confusion among our guests with regards to the version, will other servers be available, can we change the game type to TDM, will there be admin, is the bot going to be installed. I'm going to encourage everyone to dl the game and we'll go from there. I think quite a few have it now, just waiting for us to formally announce the server. I have not given this attention since the 1.7 versus 1.8 issue was in flux. Since we are resolved (or forced) to use 1.8 then I can look at setting up the TDM and see if I can have the bot work on it. I am thinking I would like to see people actually populate the server before I spend the time to setup a new bot instance. |

Spock, I've been advertising for it on our W@W server but lately the server has been crashing at an astounding rate. Mornings are especially bad (est -1 here) and it's affecting our server numbers. I'll keep advertising it thru R'con and will dl the game this weekend (along with map packs). |
